Review of 'Learning Mambo' by Douglas Paterson

Mambo is a powerful and popular piece of software, but it does have problems that it shares with many other open source products. Part of the attraction of Mambo is its flexibility, but a critical factor is the richness of the features that are offered. But this owes a lot to some of the skilled developers who have worked on the system and developers have weaknesses. One of them is a distaste for documentation, so Mambo has extremely patchy documentation. In fact I rather doubt if there is anyone who actually knows precisely how Mambo works in all its ramifications. Including me - would a book help?

Providing help for users of the Mambo Content Management System

Mambo is an open source content management system (CMS) for creating and managing websites. Formerly known as Mambo Open Source (and still commonly referred to as MOS), Mambo has atttacted many thousands of users in its four year history. It is a PHP & MySQL based content management system and is released under the terms of the GNU General Public License (GPL).

Mambo's history has been turbulent in the past year and following a very public dispute, the 2005 development team left the Mambo project to form Joomla. This year saw history almost repeating itself as dissatisfaction over corporate control of the project led to many experienced users also leaving. Sadly for the project, the lead developer also found himself unable to continue.

From the ashes, Mambo Guru was born. A support site by the community, for the community, free of corporate interests and formed by the former lead developer of Mambo and key members of the project and community, we exist for one reason - to ensure Mambo users can get the kind of help they deserve.

Our forum is active and has many Guru's waiting to help, so if you have any questions or problems with your Mambo installation come on in and join our friendly members. We set up a wiki as the Online Manual for Mambo and this has now grown to 78 articles, which makes it a good place to start learning about the features of our favourite CMS. There are code snippets posted in the forum and files for download here.

So, come on in, registration on the forum is free and so is our help.
